Writer Leonard Freeman created the show. To the show's great credit, they went the extra mile and dragged around a lot of equipment to do on-location shooting, rather than just using sound stages or retreating back to California back-lots. The location scenes and the extensive use of local talent, even if not always the most professional, gave the show an interesting texture that mainland audiences really liked. Music effects were often unique- with wind chimes and Chinese gongs adding to the exotic mix. Final edits were still made by Freeman in Hollywood. The best part for Hawaii actors and technical people was that it gave them more than a decade of professional experiences that resulted in better shoots by subsequent productions, including Magnum P.I., which further trained people for Hawaii's current television production crews used on Baywatch. |
